About Deborah Ellis
Deborah Ellis is an award winning author. She was born on August 7th, 1960 in Cochrane, Ontario Canada. Ellis started writing when she was 12. She has also had jobs that supported the peace and antiwar movements. Due to donating all of her book profits to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan and UNICEF Ellis has been threatened by the Taliban. Ellis was named to the order of Ontario is 2006 and a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016. She also received the Governor General's award, The James Addams children's book award, The Vicky Metcalf award, an ALA notable and the Children's Africana book Award Honor Book for Older Readers.
Ellis's books were inspired by her travels and people she talked to. For example, The Breadwinner was inspired when she went to Pakistan to visit a refugee camp and one of the girls dressed up as a boy. Most of her novels are taken place in the Middle East. Ellis wrote Looking for X Women of the Afghan War, The Breadwinner, A Company of Fools, Parvana's Journey, Mud City, The Heaven Shop, I Am a Taxi, Jakeman, Bifocal, Sacred Leaf, Lunch with Lenin and Other Stories, Off to War, No Safe Place, My Name is Parvana, No Ordinary Day, True Blue, The Cat at the Wall, and Moon at Nine. Her most known novels are The Breadwinner and Finding X. Her newest book is The Cat at the Wall.
